‘We Got So Close Last Year, This Time We’re Here to Lift the Trophy’: David Warner ahead of ILT20 Finals

New Delhi: Ahead of the ILT20 final, Dubai Capitals‘ star opener, David Warner, praised his team’s resilience and their strong push to clinch the title. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Warner expressed his optimism for their chances after their impressive tournament run, which included three victories over their finals opponents, the Desert Vipers.

Reflecting on the team’s excitement, Warner said, “Everyone is excited, from the coaching staff to the GMR owners and the players performing on the field. We got so close last year, and hopefully, this year we can lift the trophy.”

Caution Amid Previous Victories

Despite their previous success against the Desert Vipers, Warner was cautious, acknowledging the potential risks of momentum shifting. “When you’ve beaten them a couple of times, that’s the scary part. Sometimes that momentum can break. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen, and we can continue our form,” Warner added.

Team’s Focus on Opponent’s Weaknesses

Warner also noted the Desert Vipers’ current vulnerabilities, including an injury concern with their captain and the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga due to international duty with Sri Lanka. He highlighted the key focus for his team: “They have a powerhouse batting lineup, so for us, it’s all about taking early wickets and sticking to our basics and plans with the ball.”

Fielding and Momentum Key to Success

Emphasizing the importance of fielding, Warner attributed much of the Capitals’ success to their exceptional bowling and energetic play. “We’ve been playing some good cricket, scoring good runs, and chasing good totals. Our bowling has been exceptional. For us, it’s about having the right energy and attitude, making sure we’re hitting the ground running,” Warner stated.

Praise for Gulbadin Naib’s Performance

Warner was full of praise for Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib, who has been a crucial part of their campaign. “Gulbadin has grown from strength to strength. He’s adapted well to these wickets, which are a bit slow and low. He’s a big player for us, and hopefully, with one more game to go, we can lift that trophy,” Warner said.

Confidence in Australia’s Depth Ahead of Champions Trophy

On the Australian national team’s upcoming Champions Trophy campaign, particularly in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, Warner expressed confidence in the team’s depth. “All players are very good in World Cups, Champions Trophies, and tournament play. The Australian team knows how to win and succeed, regardless of which players they field,” he noted.

ILT20 Final Anticipation

With the ILT20 final set to take place between Dubai Capitals and Desert Vipers, Warner and his team remain focused on securing the coveted trophy. The match is scheduled for February 9th at 7:30pm IST, and promises to be an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
