WATCH: Rohit Sharma to Play Ranji Trophy? India captain to participate in Mumbai’s practice session on Tuesday

New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma has informed the Mumbai team management that he will be attending a Ranji Trophy practice match which is scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rohit Sharma has resumed training on the MCA-BKC ground in preparation for the Champions Trophy. Before their Ranji Trophy league match against Jammu & Kashmir in Mumbai, the Mumbai team is set to hold a center-wicket practice session. As per an MCA source, Sharma is yet to confirm his availability as he is still weighing whether to take part in the league match.

“He will be coming for practice sessions with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team and it is still not decided whether he will be playing the next Ranji Trophy game against J&K. He will inform the MCA in due course,” informed a source within the MCA. Sharma had a string of low scores on India’s tour of Australia, of 3, 9, 10, 3, and 6 runs in four Tests, averaging a little over 10.93, and decided to step down as captain for the last Test against Australia in Sydney.

Recently, Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed how he likes everyone play domestic cricket.

“I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given. Not only one game, but if they are available and have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. It’s as simple as it can get. If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players that you want in Test cricket,” Gambhir had said after India’s series defeat in Sydney.

The next round of Ranji Trophy matches starting from January 23 has all eyes on whether Virat Kohli will play for Delhi for the first time since 2012. While the BCCI has requested all players to participate in domestic cricket, it has stopped short of asking contracted players to play the matches.

Star Indian batter Shubman Gill is all set to represent Punjab in the upcoming Ranji Trophy round against Karnataka. Gill has recently been through a rough patch in Australia, unable to turn any of his decent starts into match-winning innings. He scored 31, 28, 1, 20, and 13 over three Test matches. While his batting was below par, it was his temperament that was brought into question under the spotlight during the series.
