New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s opinion on the BCCI’s rule regarding family restrictions has received support from renowned former Indian captain Kapil Dev. The BCCI introduced this rule following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. As per the regulation, players’ families are permitted to join them only after the initial two weeks of a tour, provided that the tour extends beyond 45 days.
Kohli expressed his views on the new regulation at the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, stating that athletes prefer having their families present during extended tours, particularly during challenging times. He added that this arrangement encourages players to assume greater responsibility as well.
Kohli expressed that most players would prefer to have their families nearby, stating, “If you ask any player, do you want your family to be around you all the time? The answer would be yes. I don’t want to retreat to my room and feel isolated. I want to experience a sense of normalcy. This way, you can view your game as a duty; once you fulfill that duty, you can return to your life.”
During the trophy-unveiling event for the Grant Thornton Invitational Golf Tournament, the renowned captain emphasized the importance of players having their families and teammates alongside them. Kapil Dev reminisced about his own experience, noting that the team would prioritize cricket during the initial phase of a tour and invite their families for the latter part.
Kapil Dev stated that the decision rests with the cricket board. He emphasized the importance of both family and team, recalling that during his playing days, they believed in prioritizing cricket in the first half and allowing families to join in the latter half for enjoyment. He suggested that a balance between the two is essential.
Kohli is set to participate in the IPL 2025 season as he prepares for his 18th year in the league.
