T20 World Cup 2024 and World Test Championships (WTC) 2025 finalists South Africa will go up against New Zealand in the second semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday. It will be the final game of the ICC tournament hosted by Pakistan – the first multi-nation event in the country after 29 years – with the final set to take place in Dubai with India awaiting the winner of the second semis match.
South Africa are the only unbeaten side in the competition so far apart from Rohit Sharma’s Team India and they will look to set up a repeat of T20 World Cup 2024 final with India with a win over Mitchell Santner-led Black Caps. But New Zealand are a side which can’t be taken lightly, coming into the Champions Trophy with a win in the mini tri-series which featured hosts Pakistan and South Africa as well.
New Zealand had defeated Temba Bavuma’s SA side at Lahore in the tri-series, chasing down 308 to win thanks to Kane Williamson’s brilliant 14th ODI century. SA will be boosted by the return of their skipper Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi – both of whom have recovered from illness which kept them out of the last match against England.
The Black Caps, on the other hand, have to choose one player who they want to leave out of Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell. Young and Ravindra both have centuries in the Champions Trophy 2025 to their name while Conway and Mitchell are yet to get going.
