New Delhi: Babar Azam finally ended his prolonged drought for a half-century in the 50-over format with a remarkable knock against South Africa in the second ODI at Newlands, Cape Town. The Pakistani captain, who had been facing difficulties in ODI cricket recently, delivered a superb innings to provide his team with a solid beginning while batting first against the Proteas. Babar brought up his 33rd ODI fifty with a series of stylish strokes, including a stunning cover drive off Marco Jansen.
Babar showcased his technique against Jansen, who bowled a full-length delivery just outside the off stump, luring the edge. However, Babar smoothly leaned into the stroke and directed it effortlessly through the cover point area with grace.

After an extended lean patch, Babar finally reached a half-century, surpassing 50 runs for the first time in 21 ODI innings. The ex-Pakistan skipper made an impressive 73 runs from 95 deliveries, featuring seven fours, and formed a crucial 115-run stand with captain Mohammad Rizwan for the third wicket. Babar was eventually removed by Andile Phehlukwayo in the 33rd over.
Talking about the game, South Africa won the toss and chose to field first under bright skies at Newlands, Cape Town. The choice proved beneficial right away as Marco Jansen got rid of opening batter Abdullah Shafique for a duck in the opening over. Saim Ayub played some bold shots during his 25-run knock but was dismissed by Kwena Maphaka in the 10th over.
The host side is looking to recover in the three-match series following a close three-wicket loss in the first game at Paarl on December 17th.
