Manu Bhaker’s historic medals at RISK, International Olympic Committee says…

New Delhi: India’s top pistol shooter Manu Bhaker is likely to get replacement for both her two bronze medals won at the Paris Olympics, as she is one of a large number of athletes who have complained that their medals have begun decaying. In recent times, several athletes from various countries around the world have shared photographs of damaged medals on their social media platforms. Sources say that Bhaker’s two medals have “faded” and these have been in this condition for some time now.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the Monnaie de Paris, the French state mint, will methodically replace damaged medals, ensuring they are engraved in the same manner as the originals.
The iron pieces embedded in the centre of each Olympic medal weigh 18 grams (about two-thirds of an ounce).

The French state mint is a government-owned entity responsible for producing coins and various forms of currency for France.

The Paris Olympics organizing committee is collaborating with the Monnaie de Paris to replace all damaged and defective medals in the upcoming weeks.

The medals for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris incorporate elements from the famous Eiffel Tower.

The 5,084 medals, comprising gold, silver, and bronze, for the Paris 2024 Olympics were created by the luxury jewelry and watch company Chaumet, which is a subsidiary of the LVMH group, and were manufactured by the Monnaie de Paris.

Bhaker is the first Indian athlete since Independence to secure two medals in one edition of the Olympics.

She initiated India’s medal tally at the Games by securing a bronze in the individual 10m air pistol event, making her the first female shooter from the nation to earn an Olympic medal.

The 22-year-old partnered with Sarabjot Singh to secure the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
