Riding high on a dominant series win against the West Indies, India women cricket team under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, will aim to extend their winning streak as they face Ireland in the inaugural women’s bilateral series. The first ODI is set to take place on Friday at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium in Rajkot.
India recently swept the West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series after securing a 2-1 victory in the T20 series. Mandhana was the standout performer, finishing as the highest run-scorer across formats. She amassed 148 runs in the ODIs, including two half-centuries, and 193 runs in the T20s, highlighted by three consecutive fifties.
In an impressive run of form, Mandhana scored five consecutive half-centuries before missing out in the final ODI. Now, leading the team in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who has been rested alongside fast bowler Renuka Singh, Mandhana will look to maintain her momentum.
With Kaur and Renuka unavailable, the batting responsibilities will rest heavily on players like Harleen Deol, Pratika Rawal, and Jemimah Rodrigues. Deol had an outstanding ODI series against the West Indies, scoring 160 runs, including a magnificent 115. Rawal and Rodrigues also contributed significantly, with 134 and 112 runs, respectively, each registering a half-century in the series.
On the bowling front, Renuka’s absence will be a significant void to fill, as she was the top wicket-taker with 10 wickets in the ODI series. The spotlight will now shift to young talents like Titas Sadhu and Saima Thakor to rise to the occasion.
Sadhu, 20, has shown promise with three wickets in ODIs and 13 wickets in T20Is. Known for her pace and swing, she has been impressive in domestic cricket and recent international outings. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Saima has been consistent, taking seven wickets in eight ODIs, and will look to build on her strong form.
Vice-captain and off-spinner Deepti Sharma will be a pivotal figure in the bowling attack, especially after her career-best performance of 6 for 31 in the third ODI against the West Indies. Priya Mishra and Tanuja Kanwar will play supporting roles, adding depth to the spin department.
As India embarks on this historic series against Ireland, the team will rely on a collective effort from its experienced core and emerging stars to continue their winning ways.
