Team India will go up against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Stadium (DIS) on Sunday. This will be the 120th encounter between the two sides in ODI cricket with India winning on 61 occasions and New Zealand coming out on top 50 times.
In the last match between the two sides – the Group A fixture of Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on March 2 – it was Rohit Sharma’s Indian side who emerged victorious to maintain an unbeaten record in this tournament. However, over the years 7 matches have had no-result in the IND vs NZ game while one match has ended in a tie.
What will happen if ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final ends in a tie?
New Zealand are no strangers to final of ICC events ending in a tie. Their ICC ODI World Cup 2019 final against England had ended in a tie and the Super Over that followed also ended in a tie. The winner on the match was decided on a count-back on number of boundaries hit by both teams and in that scenario it was England who were declared the champions.
However, the ICC have done away with this rule. If the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand ends in a tie, then there will be a Super Over to decide the winner. The teams will continue to play ‘Super Overs’ until a winner is finally decided.
Is there a provision of ‘reserve day’ for the final?
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final has a provision for ‘reserve day’ as well. Team India had to satisfied with being joint-winner with Sri Lanka in the 2002 edition of the Champions Trophy when the final was washed out on both the days due to rain in Colombo.
On the actual match day – that is Sunday – both teams will need to play at least 25 overs for it to constitute as a game. This is up from 20 overs in the league stages of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
If both sides can’t complete 25 overs due to rain, then the match will be carried forward to the ‘Reserve Day’ which is Monday, March 10. The match will start on the Reserve Day from where it was stopped on the previous day.
If the final is washed out due to rain, both teams will be once again declared as joint winners as was the case back in 2002.
