’12 yorkers in 12 balls’: Axar Patel lauds Mitchell Starc’s ice-cool nerves after Super Over thriller vs RR in IPL 2025

New Delhi: Axar Patel was full of praise for Mitchell Starc, who earned the Player of the Match honors after Delhi Capitals (DC) edged past Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 32 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Wednesday, April 16, at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Coming off a defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) in their previous home fixture, DC bounced back in style, reclaiming the top position on the points table by clinching a thrilling Super Over win against the Royals.

Starc played a pivotal role by dismissing Nitish Rana, who scored 51 from 28 deliveries, and ended his spell with figures of 1 for 36 in his four overs. Axar Patel lauded Starc for expertly defending nine runs in the final over and executing pinpoint yorkers during the Super Over. Axar mentioned he trusted Starc to rise to the occasion and deliver when the pressure was at its peak.

“I thought that if Starc could execute, he could bring us back in the game. He bowled the 20th over and the Super Over. So to bowl 12 yorkers in 12 balls, that’s why he’s an Australian legend,” Axar said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Despite conceding a no-ball in the Super Over, Starc held his nerve and was instrumental in the run-outs of Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal, limiting Rajasthan Royals to just 11 runs. In response, KL Rahul struck a boundary off Sandeep Sharma, followed by Tristan Stubbs launching a six to seal the thrilling contest for Delhi Capitals.

Mitchell Starc has emerged as one of the key performers with the ball for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2025, alongside Kuldeep Yadav. Across six matches, he has picked up 10 wickets with an economy of 10.06, including a memorable five-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Up next, Delhi Capitals are set to face Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans on Saturday, April 19, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2025: Super Starc power Delhi Capitals to miracle Super Over win vs RR

New Delhi: Delhi Capitals’ star bowler Mitchell Starc shines as Axar Patel’s side beat Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025’s first super over thriller at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.

Mitchell Starc (1/36 in 4) showcased nerves of steel in a high-pressure final over, successfully defending nine runs and pushing the match into a Super Over when Rajasthan Royals seemed destined for victory.

The Aussie left-arm quick delivered a brilliant Super Over too, allowing only a couple of boundaries. He was aided by two sharp run-outs, limiting RR to just 11 runs.

In response, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs kept calm under pressure, striking a four and a six respectively to secure Delhi Capitals’ maiden win at the Feroz Shah Kotla this season.

While chasing a target of 189, Yashasvi Jaiswal (51 off 37) and hometown hero Nitish Rana (51 off 28) had Rajasthan Royals in complete control. However, a spirited fightback from Delhi Capitals’ bowlers in the final overs shifted the momentum, resulting in a dramatic finish with RR matching DC’s total at 188/4.

Earlier in the match, Delhi posted a competitive 188/5, thanks to a steady knock by Abishek Porel (49) and impactful late innings contributions from captain Axar Patel (34 off 14) and Tristan Stubbs (an unbeaten 34 off 18) after being put in to bat.

Needing a win to stay alive in the tournament, Jaiswal came out firing, smashing two big sixes off Mukesh Kumar and following it up with a couple of crisp boundaries and a massive six against Mitchell Starc, clearly showing his aggressive intent.

Sanju Samson joined the scoring spree, though a dropped catch by Ashutosh Sharma gave him a lifeline. Unfortunately, the Royals’ skipper had to leave the field injured after appearing to strain himself during the innings.

As the run chase gained momentum, Axar Patel, who had yet to claim a wicket this season, finally made a breakthrough with a beauty that deceived Riyan Parag completely.

Jaiswal appeared to be in total control, but Axar turned to his go-to spinner Kuldeep Yadav (1/33 from 4 overs). The gamble paid off as Kuldeep dismissed the well-set Jaiswal, shifting the tide back toward Delhi.

Still, Nitish Rana wasn’t ready to back down. The left-hander played with clarity and finesse, dispatching anything within reach to the boundary ropes.

His measured strokeplay and clean hitting kept Rajasthan in contention. But the match took another turn when Starc trapped him LBW, flipping the script once more.

Earlier, Delhi’s innings was built on a steady 63-run partnership between Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul (38). That base was powered further by Axar’s fiery 34 off just 13 balls and a composed unbeaten 34 off 18 from Tristan Stubbs, ensuring DC posted a competitive total in an innings filled with momentum shifts.

Sandeep Sharma (0/33) delivered an impressive spell, smartly varying his pace to keep the batters guessing. Unfortunately, he lost his accuracy in the final over, conceding four wides and a no-ball, which dented his otherwise economical outing.

Delhi Capitals began with aggression, as Jake Fraser-McGurk (9) opened the innings by slamming consecutive boundaries off Jofra Archer (2/32), setting an early attacking tone.

Abishek Porel brought the crowd to life with a stunning assault in the second over. He went after Tushar Deshpande, racking up 23 runs that included four stylish fours.

The standout moment came with a graceful flick over deep square leg for six, drawing loud cheers from the fans.

However, DC’s early momentum hit a speed bump when Fraser-McGurk’s struggles with form continued. He mistimed a straightforward shot, handing an easy catch to Yashasvi Jaiswal at mid-off in the fourth over, handing RR their first breakthrough.

Delhi’s innings faced another hiccup as a misunderstanding between Abishek Porel and the well-set Karun Nair (0) led to a run out, derailing their brisk start.

Rajasthan’s bowlers then seized control in the middle phase, choking the flow of runs and piling on pressure through tight lines and clever variations.

Despite the slowdown, Porel found a reliable partner in the experienced KL Rahul. The senior batter steadied the ship, breaking the shackles with a pair of massive sixes, one hammered straight down the ground off Deshpande in the 7th over, and another lofted gracefully over long-off against Theekshana in the 11th.

Just as Delhi looked to be regaining momentum, Sanju Samson reintroduced Jofra Archer into the attack. The English speedster made an immediate impact, removing Rahul with a short-of-a-length ball that was safely pouched by Shimron Hetmyer at deep midwicket.

Shimron Hetmyer completed a sharp low grab just before it hit the turf, shifting the balance once again in Rajasthan’s direction.

However, Delhi captain Axar Patel, who had been quiet this season, found his rhythm at the perfect time. He unleashed a flurry of strokes, hammering four fours and a couple of sixes, setting the stage for a late flourish. Tristan Stubbs then added the finishing touches with some crisp hitting, pushing DC to a formidable total.

IPL 2025: Ricky Ponting ‘APOLOGISES’ to Yuzvendra Chahal after match-winning show, says ‘we have challenged…’

Punjab Kings registered a record-breaking win in the IPL 2025 season, claiming a 16-run win over the Kolkata Knight Riders at the New PCA Stadium, New Chandigarh on Tuesday. With Kolkata needing 112 to chase, Punjab bowlers had the pressure of taking wickets. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal picked up four crucial wickets to dismantle KKR batting unit and helped his side get the win. Doing so, Punjab defended the lowest total in the IPL history.

After the match, Ponting praised Chahal during a chat with his team in the dressing room. “I want to praise all the bowlers who were outstanding. But the little bloke sitting down here (pointing at Chahal) was tremendous,” he said.

“We have challenged you a bit during the week as well to go back to being you and bowling like you. What did you do tonight? You bowled like you, and you won us the game,” Ponting added.

Meanwhile, speaking on the results , Chahal credited the entire team for the win. “It is a team effort. We wanted to be positive and we felt if we get 2-3 wickets in the powerplay then it will be good. In the last game, I conceded 56 for 4 overs, but I had full confidence and backed myself and my abilities.

“I always have the mindset of how to get the batters out, I varied my pace and if they have to hit, they will have to make an effort. When you win such a game, the team’s morale will be high. It’s my first man of the match for Punjab, I’m confident if I keep backing my skills and believe in myself, then I will get success,” he further added.

After electing to bat, Punjab batters struggled to get going and were bundled out for 111. But backed by a jam-packed stadium in New Chandigarh, the Kings continued to fight hard to get the win. With the electric home crowd cheering for the Kings, Punjab bowlers bowled out the opposition for 95, registering a sensational win.

Ponting also praised left-arm speedsters Marco Jansen (3/17) and Arshdeep Singh (1/11) who both were crucial in the bowling attack. “Arshdeep, you are used to take the new ball. But the attitude that you showed not doing so and accepting that was good to see. Then when the opportunity came for you, you stood up as the leader of the attack, and played a role for the team tonight. That says a lot about you. That is what we want from the rest of the group, right? It’s not always going to be exactly the way we want it,” Ponting said.

“The way that we started with the ball led by Marco was tremendous. I talked in the bowlers meeting today that Marco had actually got Sunil Narine out twice in five balls before today. So I spoke with the skipper at the break and he wanted Marco to bowl the first over to get Narine out, and the strategy worked for us. It goes to show with a bit of intent and a bit of never die sort of attitude, we can keep ourselves in the game,” he added.

With four wins in six games so far, Punjab are now sitting in the fourth position in the table. With still a long way to go in the tournament, Ponting asked his team to keep their focus. “Now, let’s not get too carried away with what has happened tonight. We have set a standard for ourselves on belief, understanding what it is going to take for teams to beat us and understanding what it is going to take for us to win tough games,” he signed off.

IPL 2025: Ajinkya Rahane SLAMS KKR batters after PBKS loss, says ‘we just didn’t…’

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a narrow 16-run loss in a low-scoring thriller against Punjab Kings in match No. 31 of the IPL 2025 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Tuesday. Harshit Rana’s three-fer, alongside couple of wickets from Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy went in vain as hosts defended the target in an engaging contest.

Reflecting on the match, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane said, “The wicket was a good one, even though the ball was stopping a bit. Our bowlers bundled them out for 111 and did half the job. Chasing 112 on this wicket was comparatively easy, especially after the start we got. It wasn’t like Punjab Kings bowled exceptionally, we just didn’t bat as well.”

The captain also highlighted the learnings, from the game, backing his team to respond going into their next match. “We’re halfway through the tournament and there are seven matches to go in the league stage. It’s always about coming back with good intent, while still looking to learn and improve as a batter and take it on in the next game.”

Halfway through their league stage matches, Kolkata Knight Riders have bagged three wins in the tournament so far. However, Rahane insisted that the batting unit have to learn to grind out results in certain situations.

“It’s not about hitting sixes every time and getting that net run rate up. It wasn’t a belter or a flat wicket, there was something for the bowlers. So, we had to grind it out. Even though sometimes you have to play a maiden over in T20 cricket or play at a strike rate of 70-80, it’s okay. But you have to grind it out.

“T20 cricket is not only about hitting sixes, even though we’re seeing most players trying to look for the big shots. It’s not about that, it’s about reading the situation and having the game awareness as a batter and then take the game forward. That’s what we lacked today”, he added.

With seven matches remaining in the league stage for KKR, the captain is confident that there is no room for complacency in this experienced setup. “All the players are confident and experienced enough to handle any situation. I wouldn’t say we were complacent or are taking things for granted. I don’t think we’re doing that. We didn’t bat well and didn’t have the awareness to play according to what the situation demanded, but we learn from it,” he concluded.

Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals Dream11 Team Prediction, Match Preview, Fantasy Cricket Hints: Captain, Probable Playing 11s, Team News; Injury Updates For DC vs RR Indian Premier League 2025 in Arun Jaitley Stadium New Delhi 730pm April 16

Delhi Capitals will face off against Rajasthan Royals in match No. 32 of the IPL 2025 season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday. DC have been flying high this season with just the one loss – in their last home match against Mumbai Indians – in 5 games and are comfortably near the top of the table.

Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, are near the bottom the rung with just a couple of wins so far. Riding on the back of a four-match winning streak, the Axar Patel-led DC appear to be a well-oiled unit — until a dramatic batting collapse against Mumbai Indians brought their momentum to a screeching halt on Sunday.

What was expected to be a triumphant homecoming at the Arun Jaitley Stadium ended in disappointment, with the loss pushing Delhi down to second place on the points table. In stark contrast, Sanju Samson’s Royals are struggling near the bottom, sitting in 8th place with just two wins from six matches. Their campaign has been marred by inconsistency, particularly with the bat.

Impact substitute Karun Nair, fresh from a prolific domestic season, shone with a scintillating 89 as Delhi chased a steep target of 206. At 119/1 in 10 overs, the Capitals seemed firmly in control. But a shocking collapse followed, punctuated by three run-outs in the penultimate over, as they crumbled to 193 all out.

While Delhi will regret letting two valuable points slip away, there’s little time to dwell on the past with another crucial encounter ahead. Spin will once again be pivotal to Delhi’s success. Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and 20-year-old Vipraj Nigam have been the standout performers this season, consistently deceiving batters with their guile and variations—even under the challenge of evening dew.

Meanwhile, the Royals continue to grapple with inconsistency. Their batting, reliant on Indian stars, has largely underperformed. Yashasvi Jaiswal did score a fluent fifty in the previous match against RCB, but his form has been erratic. Skipper Sanju Samson has yet to produce a significant innings, while youngsters Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel have shown promise without delivering consistent results.

MCA names Wankhede Stadium stand after India skipper Rohit Sharma

New Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced at its Annual General Meeting on April 15th that a stand at Wankhede Stadium will be named after Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. This decision also included naming stands after former Indian captain Ajit Wadekar and former MCA president Sharad Pawar.

“Another key resolution passed during the AGM was the approval of the naming of stands at Wankhede Stadium, a proposal initially put forward by Mr. Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr. Jitendra Awhad” an MCA release said. The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will be the Rohit Sharma Stand as per the release.

Grand Stand Levels 3 and 4 will be renamed in honor of Pawar and Wadekar, respectively. “The MCA remains committed to preserving the legacy of stalwarts who have made invaluable contributions to the sport while continuing its mission of cricketing excellence,” the statement added.

Ajinkya Naik, president of the MCA, reviewed the meeting’s outcomes. “Today’s decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future. These stands and this lounge shall forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit – brick by brick, run by run,” he said.

The organization significantly expanded the resources available to its member clubs. “A major highlight of the meeting was the decision to increase the corpus for affiliated clubs to Rs. 75 crores, with a forward-looking plan to enhance it to Rs. 100 crores in the coming years. This significant move is aimed at strengthening grassroots infrastructure and supporting the long-term growth of cricket across the city,” the MCA statement added.

The organization paid tribute to the late Amol Kale. “Further, in a heartfelt tribute to Late Shri Amol Kale, the match day office at the MCA Pavilion will now be known as the MCA Office Lounge in memory of Shri Amol Kale,” it added.

Shreyas Iyer, Ricky Ponting urged to make ruthless call on Glenn Maxwell: ‘He’s had his run in IPL’

New Delhi: Despite a four-win record from six matches, the Punjab Kings haven’t reached their full potential. Glenn Maxwell’s batting performance has been disappointing in IPL 2025, prompting former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull to suggest the team bench him. Doull advises captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting to consider replacing Maxwell.

Glenn Maxwell’s IPL 2025 performance thus far includes 41 runs from four innings (0, 30, 1,3 and 7) and four wickets.

Maxwell’s recent performances have been underwhelming, lacking his usual fluency despite a 30-run score against the Rajasthan Royals. He has appeared significantly less effective than his usual self.

Cricket commentator Simon Doull advocates for the Punjab Kings to prioritize either Azmatullah Omarzai or Josh Inglis over Glenn Maxwell, citing Maxwell’s inconsistent IPL performance throughout his career, with only one or two successful seasons.

“I think Maxwell has had his run. I mean, just the way he’s getting out at the moment, it would frustrate me as a coach,” Doull said on Cricbuzz.

“That’s the disappointing thing, I think, from their point of view. So Omarzai’s in for him, Inglis in for him, would be something I’d probably look at,” he added.

Lockie Ferguson, a fast bowler for the Punjab Kings, is highly unlikely to participate in IPL 2025 due to an injury sustained in a recent game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
