Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid is getting ready to begin a new journey as he gets ready to take charge with Rajasthan Royals (RR) before the IPL 2025 season gets underway next week. Dravid, a former captain of the Royals team, will begin his stint as the head of the IPL franchise with the game against IPL 2024 runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad in match No. 2 on March 23.
The start for Dravid’s new coaching stint was not an auspicious one as the former Royals batter turned up with a cast on his leg for a training session in Jaipur. Despite suffering a leg injury during a local league match, Indian cricket legend Dravid attended the team’s IPL 2025 pre-season training session, demonstrating his unwavering commitment.
A video shared by the franchise on social media captured Dravid’s first appearance at the Royals’ s camp. He arrived in a golf cart before switching to crutches for mobility.

Though his left leg was secured in a medical walking boot, Dravid remained actively involved in the session. He greeted players, engaged in discussions with young talents like Riyan Parag, and shared a moment with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who sought his advice while practicing shadow shots.
Seated with crutches in hand, Dravid closely observed the session on Wednesday. The Royals had earlier confirmed his injury, stating: “Head Coach Rahul Dravid, who picked up an injury while playing Cricket in Bangalore, is recovering well and will join us today in Jaipur,” the franchise posted on ‘X’ along with a photo of a relaxed Dravid flashing a thumbs-up.
Dravid sustained the injury last week while batting for Vijaya Cricket Club against Jayanagar Cricketers in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Group I, Division 2 semifinal for the Sri Nassur Memorial Shield.
The 52-year-old, playing alongside his 16-year-old son Anvay, pulled a calf muscle just two deliveries into his innings but continued to bat despite the discomfort. He scored a gritty 43 off 66 balls in a crucial fourth-wicket partnership with Anvay, though Vijaya CC eventually lost the match.
Last month, Dravid made his first club appearance in 13 years, partnering with Anvay, who impressed with a 60-ball 58, while Dravid contributed 10 runs. Dravid took over as Rajasthan Royals’ head coach following a successful tenure as India’s head coach from 2022 to 2024, which culminated in their T20 World Cup triumph. He will now work closely with captain Sanju Samson and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara as the Royals prepare for the upcoming IPL season.
