Team India will begin their preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 later this month with a three-match ODI series against 2019 ODI world champions England, beginning with the first game at the VCA stadium in Nagpur on Thursday. Indians are coming into this series with a comprehensive 4-1 series win in the five-match T20I series.
The home side will see the return of star cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to their line-up – both of whom have retired from T20 international cricketer. It will be a litmus test for both Rohit and Virat, who had a forgettable time in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series against Australia.
There is speculation in the media that captain Rohit Sharma has been asked about his future plans in international cricket after the Champions Trophy 2025. “Right now, my future plans are irrelevant. There are three ODIs and a Champions Trophy ahead, and that’s where my focus lies. Speculation about my career has been ongoing for years, but I’m not here to address those rumours,” Rohit said at the pre-match press conference in Nagpur on Wednesday.
“For me, these three matches against England and the Champions Trophy are crucial. My priority is to perform in these games, and I’ll see what happens after that,” he added.
The 37-year-old has been struggling for form, managing just 31 runs in five innings at a dismal average of 6.20 during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. While there is no indication that he plans to retire soon, reports suggest that the BCCI has asked him to clarify his future plans after the Champions Trophy.
Now back in the ODI format—where he has historically excelled—Rohit stressed the importance of focusing on upcoming challenges rather than dwelling on past performances. “This is a different format and a fresh challenge. As cricketers, we all experience ups and downs, and I’ve faced plenty throughout my career. This is nothing new for me,” Rohit said.
“I’m looking ahead, not dwelling on the past. What matters is preparing for what’s next and starting this series on a strong note,” he added.
Since their dominant run in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 — where they lost only once, in the final — India have played just two ODI series, against South Africa and Sri Lanka. Under Rohit’s leadership, the team embraced an aggressive brand of cricket, a style they aim to continue as they gear up for the Champions Trophy.
