Why China is scrambling to open up to world in 2025

China remains determined to open up its economy despite facing potential trade issues with the upcoming US administration. Economic goals include boosting foreign investment in advanced sectors and focusing on green energy. While progress is noted with renewable power contributions, challenges like ageing population persist. Plans for a more open, legally-bound international market environment are in place.

Virat Kohli’s first innings average in 2024 falls behind Jasprit Bumrah and Shoaib Bashir

New Delhi: Virat Kohli has struggled in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under this time. What is typically a productive venue for him has proven difficult as his Test form continues to decline. Kohli spent another lengthy period at the crease at the Sydney Cricket Ground, but his stay ended with just 17 runs, as he once again fell victim to the recurring issue of edging a delivery outside off-stump, this time off Scott Boland.

Virat Kohli’s recent form in Test cricket has been far from ideal. After his failure in the first innings at the MCG, he now finds himself among the players with the lowest batting averages since the beginning of 2024.

Having missed the entire series against England earlier in the year, Kohli’s performances in matches against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia later in 2024 have been disappointing. In 5 first innings, he has managed just 35 runs. Among those with 5 or more innings this year, Kohli’s performance only surpasses that of Keshav Maharaj in terms of runs scored in the first innings of Test matches.

Lowest batting average in first innings since 2024:

Keshav Maharaj: 5.33

Virat Kohli: 7.00

Shoaib Bashir: 8.33

Jasprit Bumrah: 10.00

The only player close to Kohli in terms of struggles is New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell, who averages 12.33. The nearest specialist batsman is Aiden Markram, who has an average of 14.50 while opening the batting.

Kohli’s difficulties were further highlighted when Jasprit Bumrah, who outscored him with a late 22-run cameo in the innings to provide some extra runs, now has 70 runs in seven innings. Bumrah’s performance has pushed his average above Kohli’s under these conditions.

Anna Leigh Waters shatters records with historic medal haul in Pickleball

New Delhi: Teenage pickleball prodigy Anna Leigh Waters made history in 2024 by achieving the most Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Tour medals ever won by any player, regardless of gender. Waters claimed 43 gold medals and four silver medals.

She capped off the year by securing her 30th triple crown title at the 2024 CIBC Tour finals. Her remarkable achievement of 43 golds and four silvers on the PPA Tour showcases her exceptional skill and dedication. Her success has also elevated the profile of pickleball, inspiring a global audience of fans and aspiring players.

Who is Anna Leigh Waters?
Born in 2007, Leigh Waters made history in 2017 by becoming the youngest player to turn professional in pickleball. Now, she holds the title of the world’s highest-ranked female pickleball player and has quickly built a reputation for herself. By 2024, she surpassed $3 million in earnings, thanks to a combination of salary and endorsement deals.

“She will earn more than $3 million this year,” her agent Kelly Wolf had revealed.
“She has become the face of pickleball, and both the PPA Tour [Professional Pickleball Association] and MLP [Major League Pickleball] know that,” Wolf told Forbes.
“Anna Leigh is her own little cottage industry, to be quite honest,” she added.
Reflecting on the achievement, Leigh Waters did not seem overawed. “I’m young, I’m still living with my parents, but I make over seven figures a year.”
“There’s nobody else out there that has all these deals that she has right now,” Wolf added.

China’s ‘good news’ for Xiaomi, Huawei and Oppo is ‘bad news’ for Apple

China’s nationwide smartphone subsidy program may challenge Apple’s market position while aiding domestic brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo. The initiative aims to boost consumer spending amid economic challenges by expanding trade-in subsidies to cover smartphones. With Apple’s shipments in decline, this could accelerate the shift towards domestic brands, influenced by local support and promotional campaigns.
