Steve Smith breaks Virat Kohli’s THIS all-time record in Test cricket with ton against Sri Lanka

New Delhi: After not achieving the milestone in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, Australia’s interim captain Steve Smith successfully reached the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket on the first day of the opening match against Sri Lanka. In addition to reaching this significant total, Smith also scored his 35th Test century, with 17 of those centuries being scored outside of Australia. This accomplishment allowed Smith to surpass Indian cricket star Virat Kohli in the rankings for the most away centuries in Test matches.

Kohli previously ranked first with 16 centuries scored in away Test matches but was surpassed by Smith on Wednesday.

After not achieving the milestone in his hometown of Sydney during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Smith reached the five-figure mark in Australia’s first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. He executed his characteristic flick shot towards mid-on, took off for a single, and then raised his bat to recognize the crowd’s applause.

The occasion was celebrated with applause from the Australian audience.

Smith increased the score to 137/2 with his run, maintaining Australia’s solid beginning after the visiting team won the toss and chose to bat.

The 35-year-old has achieved an impressive batting average exceeding 55, with only Kumar Sangakkara having a higher average (57.40) among players with over 10,000 runs. He is now recognized as the fifth fastest player in terms of innings to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket.

The batter becomes the fourth Australian, following Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting, to achieve this milestone.

Following Smith’s latest achievement as a renowned member of the ‘Fab Four,’ Ponting believes that the dynamic batsman should be regarded as the top player of his generation.

Ponting believes that Smith’s statistics strongly support the argument for him being the top player of his generation, surpassing Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root.

“Is he the best player of his generation? It’s hard to argue against it. Joe Root is the other one now, and [Kane] Williamson’s record is outstanding as well. Joe’s last couple of years have elevated him right back up there, I think,” Seven commentator Ponting was cited in The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Five or six years ago, when this big four emerged, with [Virat] Kohli being one of those as well, Joe was probably down near the bottom part of that because he hadn’t made the hundreds the other guys had made, but he’s made 19 hundreds in the past four years,” he added.

Virat Kohli recalls when his father was asked for BRIBE to secure selection, says ‘ I got dropped…’

New Delhi: Virat Kohli’s participation in the Ranji Trophy match against Railways marks his return to India’s top first-class tournament after 13 years. Additionally, he will be playing for the Delhi team once more, a team that played a significant role in his development as a player and contributed to his status as one of the best in the world for an extended time.

This marks the first occasion that Kohli will represent Delhi in any format since the 2013 Challenger Trophy, where he captained the Delhi team to the final, ultimately losing to India B by 50 runs at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Kohli faced significant challenges on his journey to the top and had to work hard to earn a spot on the team. The former Indian captain once shared that he was removed from the state U-14 team at the last moment due to ‘compensation’ concerns. Additionally, the cricket star from Delhi disclosed that his father declined to offer any bribe.

“I was selected for the U-14 Delhi team and then I was dropped at 1:00 AM because of some complications…, you know how and what happens at the state levels, someone was preferred over me because of some compensations that were done.

“The same was offered to my father as well. That if you can (pay for selection), maybe he (Kohli) can get into the team after two games. My father straightaway said ‘I’m not gonna pay a single penny to make him play. If he can play on his talent, so be it. If not, it’s not meant for him’,” Kohli said during a conversation with Dinesh Karthik for SKY Sports.

In 2006, after the death of his father, Kohli demonstrated remarkable dedication by participating in a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi just hours later. He scored 90 runs during the game before hurrying back home to attend the last rites, marking a significant moment in Indian cricket history.

Kohli is considered one of the greatest cricketers of all time, ranking fourth in terms of total runs scored in international cricket history. With 81 centuries across all formats, he trails only Sachin Tendulkar for the most centuries achieved at the elite level.

Not Virat Kohli or Rishabh Pant, AB de Villiers picks THIS Indian player as ‘X factor’ for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

New Delhi: Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has expressed his belief that spinner Kuldeep Yadav will be a key player for India in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, set to commence on February 19. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, will play all their matches in Dubai, beginning their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. After finishing as runners-up in the last Champions Trophy, India will carry significant expectations as they enter the 2025 tournament.

In a recent YouTube video, former South African cricketer AB de Villiers mentioned that Kuldeep Yadav, a skilled left-arm wrist spinner, has the potential to be a key player for India in the UAE.

“Kuldeep Yadav is also in the Indian team, who I think can prove to be an X-factor for India. India is going to play its matches in Dubai. Spinners can get an advantage on the pitch there. Kuldeep can perform well for India,” said de Villiers.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed their 15-player team, which includes Kuldeep Yadav, for the upcoming eight-team tournament.

The Indian cricket team will conduct all their matches in Dubai, where the conditions in the UAE are expected to favor spinners. Kuldeep’s skill in spinning the ball effectively and applying pressure may prove crucial for India’s performance in the tournament. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team is set to engage in a three-match ODI series against England as part of their preparations for the prestigious Champions Trophy.

India’s squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper) , KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami
